Leon J. (Lee) Akus
Leon J. Akus, 76, of Erie passed away January 28, 2022 at Saint Vincent Health Center.
He was born in Erie on May 9, 1945 a son of the late Leon K. Akus and Stella M. Sowizral Akus.
Leon was a 1963 graduate of Cathedral Prep and soon after his graduation started working at General Electric. He was drafted during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged from the United States Navy in 1971. Leon then returned to General Electric where he worked until taking early retirement in 2000 to help care for his elderly father.
Leon was a lifelong resident of Erie and after retiring, he enjoyed traveling, bowling and fishing as well as helping one of his nieces with an adaptive ice-skating program. He also volunteered for Meals on Wheels for 10+ years, receiving their " Wheel Award" for having delivered the most routes in a year. He was a member of the Society of Holy Trinity, Siebenbuerger and several other clubs.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Leona S. Konopka and a brother-in-law Wilbur (Pete) Marsh.
He is survived by his sisters, Rose Marsh (Tempe, Arizona), Mary (Scott) Soltis, and Teresa Yeager as well as a brother, Karl (Nancy) Akus all of Erie, PA. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Ronald Konopka and by numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial mass will be held on March 5, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity R.C. Church. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Gliding Stars of Erie.
