Helen Godzwa Obituary


Helen Robie Godzwa, 98, of Erie passed away on Saturday December 11, 2021 at  Sarah Reed Senior Living.
 
She was born in Erie on January 26, 1923 daughter of the late Michael and Julia Zwolak Robaskiewicz
 
Helen  attended East High School before going to work at Hammermill Paper Company.  In later years, she was a nurse's aide at St. Mary's Home (East).
 
Helen married Edwin Godzwa on June 21, 1948 at St. Casimir Church.  She and her husband were proprietors of the Warsaw Cafe for many years.  She was a member of Holy Trinity Church, she was strong in her faith and love of family.
 
Helen was happiest when entertaining family and friends.  She loved to cook and everyone loved her Golabki.  Always known as Busia, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the center of her world!
 
Mercy Terrace Apartments was her home for the last 12 years.  While living there she made many dear friends.
 
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Edwin, infant son Thomas, sisters, Theresa and Catherine, twin brother Henry, brothers, Raymond, Steve, Edward, Leo, and John.
 
Helen is survived by her daughters Carol (Allan) Sassman and Susan Godzwa McPherson, grandchildren Eric (Marie) Sassman, Laura (Johnathan) Pabellon, Caroline and Anna McPherson, great-grandchildren Evan and Fiona Sassman.  She is also survived by a brother, Dr. Richard Robie and his wife Gertrude (Trudy), sister-in-law Norma Robie and many nieces and nephews.
 
The family would like to thank the staff of Sarah Reed Senior living for their compassionate care of Helen during these past few months.
 
A Memorial Mass at Holy Trinity Church will be announced in the spring of 2022.
 
Private burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
 
Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Catholic Church or Mercy Terrace Apartments.
